ABSTRACT
Breastfeeding is essential for child health, as it provides ideal nutritional components while acting as an immunizing agent. Additionally, it fosters the emotional bond between mother and baby. This practice involves a range of maternal and newborn-related factors. In this context, promoting exclusive breastfeeding from the prenatal period through postnatal consultations is crucial. This study aimed to identify factors associated with early weaning from the perspective of mothers in a family health unit, assess their knowledge about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the mother–child dyad, and investigate the nursing guidance provided on exclusive breastfeeding. This was an exploratory, descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted with 26 mothers of children aged 0 to 6 months, enrolled in a rural family health unit. Data collection took place in the municipality of São João do Rio do Peixe, Paraíba State, in June, through interviews guided by a semi-structured questionnaire containing both open and closed questions. The data were analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse technique proposed by Lefevre, in accordance with Resolution 196/96. The results showed that maternal absence from home, perceived insufficient milk supply, nipple fissures, improper latch, and lack of time were factors contributing to early weaning. These may be linked to limited maternal knowledge and gaps in nursing care, especially regarding guidance on exclusive breastfeeding, although some participants acknowledged its importance. Given these findings, it is essential for nurses and the broader healthcare team to implement effective strategies for supporting pregnant and postpartum women, ensuring that exclusive breastfeeding is fully practiced.
